Is this funny...or sad?

At first I was very taken aback by this...but then I started thinking...Where would you draw the line for putting some cash in your pocket? I tend to think in dire circumstances you'd go pretty far. What I will say is that this young guy was actually very pleasant to talk to..and seemed happy.

Ridiculous self exploitation OR
Ingenious panhandling?

first of all, I would like to alert you I find it very hard to critique photos, since there is usually nothing to be improved on them, except for maybe blurriness factor or use of color.

This photo is very impacting, and I think it is a little sad for somebody to go this far-they must be either incredibly desperate or completely insane.

for use of technique, it is well-used that the subject is the only thing in focus, and the sepia toning really adds an aura of sadness. one way to make it stand out a bit more would be to leave the sepia on the man, but leave the entre background in black and white.

overall, I think you are a very good photographer, which is hard to say for photographers of people.

I think he was charging YOU to kick him in the ass. That was the point. He is "panhandling". He probably thought you were a major jerk for trying to get a return after you used his ass for kicking. lol.

"By Any Means " Great Emotional photo and yes like any advertising , it grabs your attention . I give him points for originality . I have seen this all too often in S. Florida . The last two signs were , Need money for Alcohol Research , and Why lie, I need a Beer . More often than not , people in this situation need a hand up and not a hand out .

first of all, I'm really sorry for my (future) mistakes, but I'm argentinian and it's been a while since I wrote more than a sentence in english..
I believe this is one of those pictures which when you see them for the first time you find them a little bit funny, but after a while, when you realize w h a t your are seeing, a huge "uh oh" appears. you said it, "Is this funny... or sad?" and I think the beauty of this particularly shot is that: the mixed feelings, it makes you wonder "should i be laughing?"
the picture itself is perfectly taken {I would try it in black & white, but that's just me}.
it's a delicate issue {at least in my country} and this shot could have a great impact in people if it was used in a campaign or sht like that.
(enough Tonee...). I really really like it(:

I never tough this like this could be real, this photo has definitely a really strong impact. It's sad how far people can get because they want/need money.

What I'm worried about if it's legal to kick him in the ass for $1.
I mean, what if some guy comes along really mad and kicks his ass pretty damn hard.

This is awesome. Well, not that he's getting paid to be kicked in the ass, but the photo. I can't decide if he's crazy or a genius. Probably both, they tend to go together. Anyway, I really like the photo.

Sad,that America's youth has fallen to this level! This is a perfect example of the effects of LIBERALISM,and the MTV generation!! I used to give to hobos/bums,etc...,til I found out that MOST of them spent the money on cigarettes, pot, beer, and other drugs! Now,I offer to give them food, which most of them refuse!

I do find it sad but considering the humor of Venice beach I'm sure that man is not completely homeless and in turn doing it just for show/fun. You find that a lot down there.

He doesn't actually mean kick him in the ass, its easier to fly a sign with something funny on it rather than not, it gets attention, and generally you can score some bucks for a good chuckle. My bro does this, by his choice, he is homeless and you do what you have to to eat.
