Artist's Comments

"Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later... that the man before him was not an aging father but a boy, a boy much like himself, a boy who grew up and had a child of his own and, as best he could, out of a sense of duty and, perhaps love, adopted a role called Being a Father so that his child would have something mythical and infinitely important: a Protector, who would keep a lid on all the chaotic and catastrophic possibilities of life."

-Tom Wolfe

As many of you probably know... I'm still a noob when it comes to portraits, but I've been trying to work on them lately. This is one I took of my Dad... I'm just really hoping to get some feedback/critique on it. May keep it up or may take it down after I get some feedback... I really don't care about the favs on this one; really just trying to grow in my skill of taking portraits.. I'll love you forever if you'll do a critique on this... whether good or bad! Haha. Thanks in advance!

this photo is an inference. He is waiting for the photographer to sit down by him and converse, and you know it also.

to me, this photo is more about heart than technique. you could have easily done a sharpened, crisp close up of his face. But you would have captured more irritation than the relaxed amusement of a dad humoring his photographer son.

This photo is perfect. It is of a man comfortable in his position in life, with plenty of room to welcome those he loves in it.

His eys and demeanor depict wisdom and wit. He is as comfotable outdoors as he is indoors, and his focus is on enjoying where he is, being where he is. His depth of character shines from his eyes. He knows plenty of reasons to be grief stricken and bitter, but his strength of character led him to pass those two cups by, to drink his fill from the cup of nobility.

Your father appears to be a man of noble character, ironic wit, and orneryness that comes out now and then when he gets a tad too peeved.

(Let me know how near I am the mark on assessing his character through a photo)

Portraiture is not an easy craft to master, I gave the image lower marks for technique because it does not conform to the conventions of classic portraiture. Usually the subject is the center of focus of the image. The way you composed the image leaves an ambiguous background with the subject in a position that makes an uncomfortably ambiguous diagonal. The lighting and color are not flattering but they do reveal the character of the subject. I am assuming from the flash glare in the subjects eyes that you used a fill flash. Perhaps an ISO 400 under natural light would have been less harsh. You might want to consider editing out the light points in his eyes. The details in the foreground are crisp and interesting. He appears to be amused, ready to make some witty remark. Taken together, it is a strong, revealing portrait. The way in which you composed the image hints at an emotional ambiguity while it portrays an interesting character, completely at ease with the world. Quite interesting! By all means keep on experimenting.

I have very minimal experience at Portrait work myself so can offer no advice mate but I stare at your Dad for a few minutes now and I see the character of a honest genuine person staring right back at me...if that`s what he is,you`ve portrayed him perfectly Shawn :camera:

i'd just crop about half-to-2/3 space above the head. it's kinda distracting for me. but it's just my personal feeling.
