Artist's Comments

As I was walking down the street I heard his voice shout out to me "What kind of music do you like" to which I replied "What kind of music do you play" upon seeing the guitar he was holding. He said he played it all... classic rock, blues, country; you name it and he'd play it. I let him know that I was partial to classic rock myself and he offered to play me some Eagles. I stooped down and listened to what I can honestly say is one of the best renditions of "Take it Easy" I've ever heard... this man playing on the street for some extra money had a stunning voice and quite admirable guitar skills.

After that we talked a bit, and I asked him if he could play me one more song of his choice, and also if I could take some shots of him while he did so... to which he happily obliged. Then I sat there smiling and taking shots as he sang a highly personalized version of"Okie from Muskogee". After all was said and done I wished him well; left a tip in his guitar case then we talked about music for a while before I was on my way. Great experience... and a great guy; I hope he catches a break.

I was pretty happy with how this shot came out... the lighting was a tiny bit of a challenge, so I had to get to the side to get lighting that actually created a worthwhile lighting situation. Usually I realize doing something off center like this isn't ideal, but it just seemed to work in this case. Conceptually I think it adds to the feeling that he's playing the guitar on the corner off the main sidewalk and 99 percent of people just walk right by him without even making eye contact. The framing here hopefully will convey that idea that while you're viewing this it'd seem like you're walking right there on the sidewalk with him off to the side competing for your attention. You have to make a decision to stop, and if you do you're in a for a musical treat, and the chance to meet a really nice guy. :)

Thanks so much as always for looking my friends, I really appreciate all the support. I've been trying to experiment lately and shots like this have been a great deal of fun for me, but of course also a challenge. I'd absolutely adore any critiques on this.

A great portrait.
A lot negative space...
that isn't really negative.

The light is close to perfect. It differs from studio light though and that's what it should: The face is rendered harder, the whole picture is very bright and warm though darker shades still exist in the shadows. The man seems to look through the viewer and that's what brings me so much closer to the scene. It all has this touch of street photography.

The rest of the space is used wisely to but everything together and in context. While the guitar is recognisable but only takes up a fist of precious space the background shows just enough to be recognised but not to draw away from the portrait. Model and background again are connected for the lower body fades out of focus.

Wonderful composition...
especially since its a unusual genre for you to play with.

This really is absolutely gorgeous. The emotion you tried to express is definitely there. Beautiful job, and an equally wonderful story to go along with it

Aww man, I'd like to meet him. I can almost hear his music by looking at him; smooth and beautiful, yet masculine and strong.

As for the picture, I really like the colorscheme, and I very much agree with you on how it actually worked quite nice, to have him placed off center.

At last, you should really get another ID on your page, it's kinda scary, very nice, but scary. From reading a lot of the "artists comments" on you pictures, you seem like a very friendly man, so in my head, your ID doesn't fit :D

The picture not being centered is a nice effect, sometimes, because it can show the background (of course) and it can create a certain weight to it. I think the lighting is great, so nice maneuvering! ;) If there were a man playing on the street and I was walking alone, I would definitely stop and listen and give him some money. I mean, he earns it! But I'm always with my family, and they never stop to appreciate anything but clothes. >(
