Artist's Comments

I'd love any opinions on this... it's far different than my usual architecture stuff. Last time I went out I took some shots that were much more straight forward than what I usually do (using a 50mm lens instead of something really wide just to see how it went), and I found it can be just as fun as taking crazy shots of the same places. It helps to focus on the form and look of the building more. Still I'm not sure of what to think... or if I'll keep this up. I liked everything about it, the only thing I'd change is how bright it was outside; which created some shadows that may or may not add to the shot. I might try doing 50mm stuff at the fair once it comes, in the square format; so this is a but of practice too. :D

Minor update-Updated the tones a tad, to try and take away some of the blue-ish highlights (or at least tone them down a bit).

Critiques

Ok... well it's my second critique so cut me some slack once again. First thing which caught me is the colortone. It looks cold but for some reason, it fits to this photography's vibe and I personnally like it. As for the composition, it reminds me of couple of CD cover artworks created by 2 worldwide famous CD cover designers : Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti by Storm Thorgerson [link] and, less known, but still interesting in the composition, Tiles' Window Dressing by Hugh Syme [link]

part of this picture's strength to me are the shadows which can be seen both on balconies and upon the walls. It really balances dark and bright tones.
Also I found very humoristic and smart the presence of the Parking Machine in front the main door. Who would park his car and stay in this hotel ? Neat shot, great job

The picture itself is quite interesting. At first when you glimpse at it, it appears to be completely symmetrical. Good thing is, it appears to be, so when looking at it more carefully you get to notice some more details.

I also like the fact that it was taken with a 50mm although your work with widerl lenses is amazing, a normal lens conveys reality much better than a wide one.

The color temperature is what brings me a bit off on this image, its just to bluish. I also like the parking machine, its just where its not supposed to be, but it adds something a bit of depth I think.

Well done! I love to change lenses because it gives me a different perspective on everything. You've composed this shot nicely and I like your editing of it, as well!

For some reason, I can't stop looking at this. I think it's the shadows that hold my attention. Even though this hotel looks creepy and abandoned, the shadows make it look kind of... pretty? I don't know. It's just interesting, I guess.

Today, the whole world came crashing down on me, so I got some tape and stuck the map back onto the wall.

There is nothing to worry about this one, it's perfect as it is!! I suggest you Shawn to send it to =lifeiscreative's 50 mm blog :pointr: [link]
