High Gas Prices and Photography Don't Mix

As I was twiddling my thumbs filling up my gas tank this morning, I started to realize something frightening. That the gas I use to drive around and take photos with, is actually costing me more than my actual photo equipment that I use to take the pictures. Let me explain. I spent around 1200 dollars for my camera that I'm currently using. On the average phototrip that I go on I do a lot of driving; it's just necessary for the type of shots I like to take... I have to drive a lot to find stuff. Usually I'll use either a full take or sometimes a little more in order to do this. Currently with gas prices around 3 dollars; it's costing me a little over 40 dollars to fill up my tank. If gas goes up into the 4 dollar range; it'll take even more than 50 dollars to fill up my tank. Just to clarify too... I drive an "economy car". Basically at the current 40 dollar per tank fill up cost I'm paying... if I go on one 3 phototrips per month; I'm gonna spend more than 1400 dollars on gas just for the phototrips. Which as you can see is more than the price tag of my camera. I say this not to whine; but to kind of step back and wonder if I'm the only one noticing this problem. The solution is obvious... don't drive around so damn much; but you know what... I enjoy it, and I'd rather not limit myself in that way. Just food for thought. Come on gas prices... please go down; you're killing me.

In other news... I just purchased a new lens. I've been wanting to get some new gear for a while now. I ended up getting a fisheye lens; which should be a hell of a lot of fun. I probably won't get it for a while, but look forward to some different stuff once I get it. I can't wait. Thanks for reading everyone, and all the best.

:peace:

I know what you mean. The price of petrol in the UK is very expensive now as well. I just passed my driving test this week and I'm looking to buy a car soon and even to get a full tank on a car with high fuel efficiency it'll be costing at least £30/$60. Tis too much!

I was gonna say spend the money on a longer lens so you can shoot those places from home lol

You should do some cycling maybe over a weekend period then you'd get places, have photography opportunities, save the environment and get additional exercise at the same time :)

Or just try and find more beauty in your immediate surroundings, maybe even make your surroundings look beautiful?

Anyway, as long as you're as wonderful as you are now if not better then I'm not too fussed :D

Doesn't it stink? I think our only hope is that gas stops its upward hike in prices... I'm doubtful though.

Yeah... that's an idea. The only problem is that I live in the middle of a big city; I'm basically surrounded by retail stores and stuff. So I have to go a ways to get what I consider interesting shots; still it would be worth it to try and find good shots closer to me. Maybe getting my new lens will open up some new opportunities. :D Thanks for the thoughts!

gah! thats so expensive. i was watching cnn last night and they had a whole piece about the prices of oil and so on, and the official prediction is that there is no decrease of gas prices in sight for the US :( at least we don't have the prices they have in europe where it is about 3x the cost it is here!
makes me glad i live in the middle of a city...
subways and cabs save me alot of moolah!
